Acer’s board of directors has agreed to take one-time action on recent findings of high channel inventory and disputed accounts receivable in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) operations. Acer will provide channels with US$150 million in sales allowance to clear inventory, which will result in operating loss of the same amount.

The move follows the replacement of former CEO and president Gianfranco Lanci two months ago prompting Acer to a company reorganisation. The new management team carried out internal audits of EMEA operations and discovered abnormalities in terms of channel inventory stored in freight forwarders’ warehouses, and in the accounts receivable from channels in Spain.

Technology powerhouse HP has maintained its top position in the East African PC market, with shipment growth of 46% year on year, supported by strong commercial demand and improved run-rates during Q1 2011. The vendor remained very strong in the Kenya market but continued to struggle in Ethiopia and Uganda. Rival Dell came a close second in Q1, with more than 600% year-on-year growth, after an aggressive channel recruitment and revamped drive from mid-2010. Dell continued to benefit more than other vendors from the shift from the grey market to official channels, especially in Ethiopia and Uganda, where desktop sales increased significantly. Taiwanese headquartered vendor Acer was third in East Africa in Q1, with 200% year-on-year growth, mainly thanks to deals in the telecommunications space. This channel is expected to continue growing as telcos explore data services to supplement dwindling voice revenues.

Acer Group appointed Giuseppe Mastandrea as the new Regional Director for Middle East, Turkey and Africa (META). Giuseppe would be responsibile for all the Acer brands: Acer, E-Machines, Gateway and Packard Bell. Giuseppe is a seasoned player for and has been associated with Acer since he joined in 1993 and served several countries in Europe in the past including Italy, France, Poland and Turkey. With the acquisition of Gateway and Packard Bell, Giuseppe lead the Global Marketing and Branding team to develop and handle the multi-brand strategy. He will lead the pack of acer in the whole region and will be responsible to further advance the market-share of Acer in this region.
