Synology has been using post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics in its NAS products since November 2018, starting from DiskStation models DS218 and DS218+, with a percentage of up to 27%. The post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic is a material derived from electronic waste and is TÜV-certified and RoHS-compliant to meet the highest standard.
“We’ve gone through a hard time in the beginning. Lots of experiments are done to find out the best way to implement this plan. But it’s worth it,” said Hewitt Lee, Director of Product Management at Synology. “Companies play an important role in environmental protection. As Synology grows, we examine every aspect of our business to better the world. Using recycled plastics is our first step to making contributions to society. Together with our partners, we will keep up the effort and meet our commitment to environmental sustainability.”
Aside from using recycled plastics, Synology has also joined the Amazon Certified Frustration-Free Packaging Program to reduce packaging waste and environmental footprint. As a customer-oriented company, Synology strives towards durable, impact-resistant packaging with easy-to-follow instructions on it. Wrapped in lab-tested protective designs, the products can withstand shock and vibration and therefore minimize product damage during transportation.
Looking to the future, Synology plans to expand the adoption of PCR plastics in more NAS models and will keep searching for new ways to minimize environmental impact without causing inconvenience to users.
