In the first quarter of 2011, worldwide server shipments grew 8.5 percent year-on-year, while revenue increased 17.3 percent, according to Gartner, Inc. In server shipments, HP remained the worldwide leader in the first quarter of 2011 with a year-on-year shipment increase of 2.3 percent for the quarter. This growth was driven by increases produced from HP’s ProLiant brand. HP’s worldwide server shipment share was 29.8 percent, representing a 1.8 percent drop in share from the same quarter in 2010.

The PC market in East Africa strongly expanded in the first quarter of 2011, even as the worldwide PC market contracted and the pan-African market almost stagnated. According to a recent report by market research company IDC, East Africa (including Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Uganda) recorded a massive 76% growth in PC shipments and it further expects the East African PC market will further grow by about 35–45% in 2011 before cooling off in 2012.

Microsoft has previewed the next major release of Windows Phone, code name “Mango,” for the Gulf region which coincided with a series of media events around the world. “Mango” will deliver more than 500 new features to push the boundaries of the smartphone experience around communications, apps and the Internet. The Mango release will be available for free to Windows Phone 7 customers and is scheduled to ship on new phones beginning this fall; More details on device update timing will be provided closer to availability.
