Review: Oppo F5

Oppo’s new F5 is the company’s latest flagship that features a bezel-less design, in line with most flagships out there on the market. The F5 comes with boatload of flagship features at a very affordable price point.

Design

The phone features a 6-inch screen that offers a 18:9 aspect ratio maximizing the display real estate on the device. The display offers a 1080-by-2160 resolution and a ppi of 402 pixels per inch.

Since the phone is being marketed as a “selfie expert”, the Oppo F5 features a 20MP front camera that boasts an f/2.0 aperture with AI Beauty Mode. The fingerprint sensor has now been moved towards the rear just below the 16MP rear camera.

On the right edge of the device, you get the power button and the SIM tray, which accepts two nano SIM cards and a micro SD card. On the left, you will find the volume rockers. At the bottom of the device you ill find that Oppo still uses the micro USB standard for all your charging and data syncing requirements.

At the bottom you also get the 3.5mm audio port, a microphone and a speaker grille. On the top edge, you will find a noise cancelling secondary microphone. The overall design and build quality of the phone is top notch.

Hardware
The phone also packs in AI Beauty Recognition technology. Oppo is planning to launch the F5 in three different variants – one with a 4G of RAM onboard, one with 6GB of RAM and another entry level model. The one I have reviewed here is the 4GB variant.

Under the hood, the phone is powered by a 2.5GHz MediaTek MT6763 octa-core processor. The phone comes with 32GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded to 256GB using a micro SD card.

The Oppo F5 runs Android 7.1 Nougat operating system with Oppo’s very own Color OS 3.2 on top of it. While you may frown at the Mediatek MT6763 processor, there’s a lot going on for the Oppo F5 in terms of processing power and standing up against the competition.

Performance
On our AnTuTu benchmarks, the Oppo F5 was able to score 64073 points which is respectable for a mid-ranger. But the phone performed really well during my tests and I did not encounter any sort of lag when flipping through multiple apps at once.

Oppo has always positioned its “F” series as “selfie experts” giving more importance to its front cameras than the rear ones. That does not mean that the phone’s rear camera does not carry weight. The rear camera performed really well under good lighting conditions.

Under low light conditions though we did see a hint of noise in some of the shots I took. The front camera though is the star feature of the Oppo F5. It consistently shot some amazing pictures.

Oppo has fitted the F5 with a 3,200mAh battery that supports fast charging (using a 5V, 2A charger). It took a little more than hour for the battery to charge to 100 percent from a 20 percent start point. Even with heavy usage I got enough battery life for a little more than a day.

Verdict
The Oppo F5 definitely comes with boatload of features at an affordable price point of AED 1199. It offers a bezel-less display experience, comes with good cameras, brilliant UI and overall good performance. If you are looking for a very good phone that also takes good selfies, the Oppo F5 should definitely be on your shortlist.
