The undersea fibre optic cable between Angola and Brazil is expected to be completed within a year, Angola Cables, the Angolan company, which is part of a consortium on the project has revealed.
Other companies on the project are Algar Telecom (Brazil), Antel (Uruguay) and Google.
The cable will cost $160 million and will become the first transatlantic fibre optic system in the southern hemisphere, connecting Africa to South America, Angola Cables announced in Luanda earlier this week.
Angola, known for its rich oil reserves is positioning itself as a future growth point for the telecommunications sector in Africa. The project will link cities of Santos and Fortaleza in Brazil, with Boca Raton, Florida, in the United States. The cable will be about 10 556 km.
