East Africa records massive growth, says IDC

The PC market in East Africa strongly expanded in the first quarter of 2011, even as the worldwide PC market contracted and the pan-African market almost stagnated. According to a recent report by market research company IDC, East Africa (including Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Uganda) recorded a massive 76% growth in PC shipments and it further expects the East African PC market will further grow by about 35–45% in 2011 before cooling off in 2012.

HP to buy Printelligent

HP signed a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all of the assets of Printelligent, a closely held provider of managed print services (MPS). The infrastructure, software and trained workforce of Printelligent, combined with HP’s channel relationships, experience and broad base of services and solutions will strengthen HP’s leadership in MPS. This acquisition, combined with HP’s current assets, also will help HP’s channel partners extend their customer relationships while recognizing new revenue streams.

Toshiba acquires Landis+Gyr

Toshiba Corporation, a global provider of electronics and social infrastructure systems, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the entire equity of Landis+Gyr AG, a company incorporated in Switzerland and a manufacturer of energy management solutions for utilities. The acquisition, valued at US$2.3 billion including net debt, will substantially enhance the scope of Toshiba's Smart Grid and Smart Community businesses and position the company as a global force with world-class capabilities.

Microsoft previews next Windows phone

Microsoft has previewed the next major release of Windows Phone, code name “Mango,” for the Gulf region which coincided with a series of media events around the world. “Mango” will deliver more than 500 new features to push the boundaries of the smartphone experience around communications, apps and the Internet. The Mango release will be available for free to Windows Phone 7 customers and is scheduled to ship on new phones beginning this fall; More details on device update timing will be provided closer to availability. Windows Phone will also add support for additional languages, expand access to apps by launching Marketplace in new countries, and partner with new OEMs to enable expansion to new markets.

InterSystems appoints new Country Manager for Middle East

InterSystems Corporation announced the appointment of Michel Amous as the Country Manager for Middle East and India region. The new position is part of a larger investment strategy in the Middle East region, which includes the recent development of a direct sales business structure, in response to growing demand for InterSystems' software for connected healthcare. Before joining InterSystems, Michel was head of sales at Cerner Middle East. Amous also held various regional roles in sales, development and sales force effectiveness at Novartis. Amous has an MBA from the University of Chicago and a Bachelors of Science degree from the American University of Beirut.

HP signs MoU with Jordan's ICT Ministry

The Jordanian Ministry of ICT has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with HP Jordan to develop common programmes and share expertise and practices to offer state-of-the art integrated technologies for government departments. The MoU is in addition to supporting professional IT education and assist the Ministry in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in that country. The MoU which was signed by Eng.
