Review: Intel NUC Kit NUC7i3BNK

The Intel Kaby Lake NUC is finally here and we received a test unit for a couple of weeks. For those not in the know, NUC is essentially the Next Unit of Computing, a mini PC kit from Intel.

Let’s quickly go through the specs. The Intel NUC7i3BNK runs on an Intel Core i3-7100U Processor that comes with a 3M Cache and  clock speed of 2.40 GHz. The kit is capable of taking in a maximum memory of 32GB. In terms of storage, the kit offers support for M.2 SSD card (sizes 22×42 and 22×80).

It also offers a 2.5-inch drive slot, which can be used to fit an SSD or HDD, with a maximum thickness of 9.5mm. For graphics, the kit includes Intel HD Graphics 620 GPU. You also get an Intel Gigabit Ethernet LAN adapter and an Intel Wireless-AC 8265 WiFi adapter for all your wireless internet requirements.

Connectivity-wise, the Intel NUC7i3BNK comes with a normal, full-sized HDMI 2.0 port and a USB Type-C Port with DisplayPort 1.2. It also comes with four USB 3.0 ports (two on the front and two on the rear). You also get a Micro SD card reader that supports SDXC cards and UHS-I, dual-array microphones on the front panel, an infrared sensor and a 3.5mm audio jack.

In terms of look and feel, the Intel NUC7i3BNK sports a typical NUC reference design from Intel. Build quality is quite good and feels durable. The NUC already came with Windows 10 installed onto it, and hence setting it up was a piece of cake.

All we had to do is connect the NUC to the display, a keyboard and a mouse, and we were good to go. The NUC is supposed to be a device that offers enough computing power for your day to day computing needs. These include using the internet, sending / receiving mails, using productivity apps such as Microsoft Office, and light gaming sessions.

It is not meant to replace your gaming PC. Having said that, the overall performance of the Intel NUC7i3BNK was good. It will run some of the less demanding games as long as you’re willing to keep the resolution and details low enough.

The Intel NUC7i3BNK would be ideal desktop PC for normal web browsing, office applications, and so on.
