Review: Bose SoundSport Wireless

Bose SoundSport Wireless is a very comfortable in-ear wireless Bluetooth sports headphone that is also well built and moisture resistant. It sounds great too but that is one area Bose hasn’t really faced any problem. The headphone works decently as a headset for workout sessions and making phone calls as well.

The SoundSport features a behind-the-neck cable with an inline remote control and microphone near the right earpiece for adjusting volume, skipping songs and making calls. The top of the right earbud sports a single button for pairing and powering on. In a quick and simple manner, the SoundSport connects via Bluetooth or NFC and automatically re-pairs with your in-range device when powered up.

In terms of design they’re definitely bulky and not too pretty. On the brighter side the bulky earplugs do not jam the earbud into your ear, completely sealing off your ear canal like most in-ears do. When you put them on, they bulge out of the ears to the point where it feels like they will fall out, and they would if it weren’t for the winged tips. Bose includes three pairs of eartips (small, medium and large) that help in maintaining a very secure fit. The box also includes is a nice little circular, padded zip-up protective pouch.

The sound quality is very good for an in-ear sports Bluetooth headphone. The SoundSport has a rich, powerful bass packed in a surprisingly lightweight design. Bose shines in the low-end, with throaty and richer bass notes. What’s interesting about the sound is that this headphone seems to be optimized for outside use and sounds smoother, better balanced outdoors. While wearing these headphones, outside sound does leak in allowing you to hear some of what’s going on around you instead of being sealed off completely. This again seems intentional since when running or biking, you’ll be able to hear cars coming.

The SoundSport’s battery life is a little disappointing at roughly six hours, though results will vary depending on volume levels during playback. While this may be enough to get through a couple of days but even then they need to be charged at least twice a week. It takes approximately two hours to reach a full charge and a micro-USB port is located on the left earpiece beneath a flap for the purpose.

You can also download the Bose Connect app to adjust some features like, the time it takes the earphones to automatically power down or disable the robotic voice prompts you hear when powering up or down. The features of this app are useful but very limited and not really essential to the operation of the earphones.

Overall, Bose has made a solid pair of Bluetooth exercise earphones that are very comfortable to wear, are water- and sweat-proof, and provide a powerful audio performance. While they do fit securely and sound awesome, they are among the pricier options in this category with a disappointing battery life. The ear pieces protrude noticeably from your ears but are still a secure fit, thanks to the wingtips. The SoundSport provide a great sound experience that is better than most fitness headphones. So, if you have the bucks to shell out, the SoundSport Wireless can give your exercise routine the right motivation during workouts.
